Australian Fire Danger Ratings System

Australian Fire Danger Rating System

The Australian Fire Danger Rating System is a national consistent system to display fire danger ratings.  The national system ensures no matter where you travel or visit fire ratings are presented the same.

Fire danger ratings tell you how dangerous a fire will be if one started.  The higher the fire danger, the more dangerous the conditions and the greater the impact will be if a fire starts.

Each rating has a message to encourage you to take action to protect yourself and others in the face of bushfire risk.

The fire danger rating levels are:

  • Moderate: Plan and prepare
  • High: Prepare to act
  • Extreme: Take action now to protect your life and property.
  • Catastrophic: For your survival, leave bushfire risk areas.

When no Rating is issued, the arrow will point to a white ‘no rating’ level.

Fire danger ratings are available four days in advance to help you plan your travel and activities.

Be sure to monitor conditions and check the VicEmergency website or app while at home and before travelling.   Daily Fire Danger Ratings can be found on the CFA website.
